Is it true that
Patricia Heaton wasn't the original casting choice for Debra Barone? |
|
"Romano and Rosenthal wanted Maggie Wheeler (Chandler's whiny ex-girlfriend on
Friends) to play Ray's wife, Debra. CBS "thought it was too ethnic for me and
her to be together," says Romano, whose actual wife looks more like Wheeler than
Heaton (Wheeler did wind up on the show, as Ray's best friend's spouse).
The network proposed Jane Sibbett (Ross' WASPy ex-wife on Friends). "We thought
that was just too un-ethnic," says Romano. A week before the pilot taping,
everybody agreed to cast the dark-haired-but-not-too-ethnic Heaton as Debra."

Why
does Robert touch his chin with his food every time he eats? |
|
It's one of the many idiosyncrasies that Robert has. Watch the episode
"Crazy Chin" for more details. Other quirky behavior that Robert does includes:
~ Taking off his shoes every time he counts to 12 (The Pilot)
~ Separating his "good n plenty's" into good (pink), plenty's (white) and cuties (irregulars)
~ His dollar bill can't face each other because he feels like they are kissing
~ Separate draw for his left and right socks
~ Cleaning his car keys
"In its early days, "Everybody Loves Raymond" also played up the fact that Ray
Barone's brother, Robert, compulsively touched his glass or spoon to his chin
before drinking or eating. His apparent OCD has since been toned down, according
to Brad Garrett, who plays Robert, because star Ray Romano worried that his TV
brother would come off as too "goofy." - Salt Lake Tribune - July

How
many opening title sequences have there been for Everybody Loves Raymond? |
|
6 opening credits.
Season 1 - The Pilot - Ray is putting together a cubby house for the kids. He says that he has a wife named Debra, 5 year old Ally and twin boys. "My parents live across the street.
That's right, and my brother lives with them. I love my family and would do anything for them." Then he gets trapped the playhouse that he made. ("Debra! Someone call my father I am hyper-ventilating.") N.B. We do not see any other cast members in this opening sequence.
Season 1 - The Pilot onwards - Ray is raking the leaves and the cast show up moving across a conveyor belt. "Hi, I'm Ray and I live here in Long Island with my wife Debra. She's great with the kids, the house, everything. Oh, I don't know how she does it." Debra is shown going by holding a laundry basket in one arm and talking on the phone on the other. The kids are then shown playing with their toys. "We've got a daughter Ally and twin 2 year old boys. It's not really about the kids." Marie and Frank go by. "My parents live across the street." Marie is holding a plate of food, Frank is shaving. "That's right! and my brother lives with them (Dog barking in the background).
"Now not every family would go by on a conveyor belt for you, but mine would because --" Roberts goes by and finishes off his sentence "Everybody Loves Raymond" Ray: "Yeah. . . Yeah . . . Yeah!"
Season 2 - Similar theme to the one described above - Ray is sitting in the lawn chair, and the cast is flying by with strings on them. Debra goes by and blows Ray a kiss. Then the kids go by, followed by Frank and Marie. Ray "Not every family would defy gravity for you but mine would because-- "Roberts walks by and mutters "Everybody loves Raymond". Ray: "Hey you didn't fly."
Season 3 - 5 -
In a homage to action films like "Die Hard", we see Raymond peering through his
lounge window. He sees his folks exiting their home and walking over to his
house. He turns in slow motion to Debra, alerting her about his parents'
impending presence.
In a series of fluid cuts, Raymond and Debra roll and jump around the room,
turning off lights, television sets, and sound systems, in an effort to make the
house appear empty.
Tension mounts as they race to finish preparations for their
ruse as Raymond's folks get closer to the front door.
Raymond manages to turn off the last light, making an impressive leap and roll,
and landing against the front door in the process. Suddenly, his mother's hand
appears through the mail slot, patting an exhausted Raymond on the head.
Season 6 The sixth season opening title credits started with the
announcement "It's another season of Everyone Loves Raymond!" in a booming voice
with the family playing football, resulting in Marie losing a tooth and smiling
with the "hole" in her teeth.
Season 7, 8, 9 Opening credits features clips from past seasons to the song
Jungle Love (performed by the Steve Miller Band) - a song which originally featured in the episode
Season 6 episode Snow Day and the Everybody Loves Raymond: The First Six Years special.

Is
it true Ray Romano never liked the title of the series "Everybody Loves
Raymond"? |
|
With it's solid ratings, bushelful of Emmy nominations and critical praise, it's
clear that everybody loves "Raymond" even if the star of the series has never
cared much for the title. To this day, Ray Romano, for whom the sitcom was built
and on whose real life is based, says he would feel uncomfortable warming
garments that sport the show's logo. "I can't do that," he says. "I've come to
terms with the face that I'm not going to change it, but a little of me regrets
that I didn't put up more of a fuss in the beginning." Romano knew some people
would turn the title into a taunt, but that didn't bother him as much as the
idea that it might keep potential viewers from watching.
"I have this theory that people who don't know the show -- and maybe in year
five, those people are find are find -- they still hear the title, people who
don't know me or anything, and it just sounds like it's not an adult sitcom. I
thought we had to fight that in the beginning and for the first couple of
years".
